Archery is Alive and Well
The World Police and Fire Games, have been held on odd years since 1985, (except in 2021, when COVID forced the postponement by a year.) Competitors are Police, Firefighters and Corrections officers from around the world. The Games have been held in such places as Canada, USA, Spain, Ireland, and China to name a few. Gold Coast Archers member Rick Dorey (West Palm Beach Fire Dept.) has
been competing in the 3 archery events since 2001 and has worked to encourage others to take advantage of this opportunity to meet and compete with people and travel around the world. This year over 8000 competitors from 70 countries competed in over 60 sports in
Birmingham, Alabama. Florida Archery was well represented by Rick and fellow club members Phil Webb (WPB Fire) and Vasile Mircea (Seminole Tribe Fire) as well as 3 other Florida firefighters –Jason Dorey (Palm Bay Fire), Frank Ogden (Coral Gables Fire) and Dennis Piper (City of Cocoa Fire). They brought home a total of 16 medals between them – 7 Gold, 6 Silver and 3 Bronze. Way to Go
Guys! The next games will be in Perth, Australia in March of 2027.
Sadly we have lost a life long archer and good friend to many at our club, Stan Mintz passed away Monday, July 7th. Coincidently he was born and died on the same day which was his 92 birthday. Stan shot regularly and was very active socially till the end a great accomplishment for a man of his age. He leaves behind a legacy in the traditional circles of South Florida and all of his friends and acquaintances at Gold Coast.
He will be missed.

Safety note to all archers.........
It is specifically against NFAA rules to draw your bow above horizontal... it's also against NAA rules. The practice of drawing a bow up in the air is unsafe, and many archers do it due to heavy poundage or simply out of bad habit. Pushing the bow out with the bow arm... or better yet, pushing it slightly downward... can assist in drawing it back. One arrow loosed high in the air and killing or damaging property three blocks away can set our sport back for years... much less ruin the day of the individual with the bow and the individual harmed by it!
